The Koobface Virus Is Back and It's Aiming For Twitter

After hijacked accounts in Facebook, MySpace and other social networking sites it seems the crafty old worm named “Koobface” is back. Twitter announced earlier this week that the Koobface virus has been found in several user accounts.

The Koobface virus runs through your computer and finds all the info it can to spread itself through social networking web sites.

If the worm gets access to your Twitter or account, it will be suspended until the virus is removed from your computer. This has been done to prevent spreading the virus to other users. Several hundred infected accounts have already been found by the Twitter team and have been suspended. Infected accounts holders received emails with instructions on how to reactivate thier accounts.

Facebook, MySpace and other social media sites should already have procedures for dealing with Koobface since they have been targeted in the past. It’s probably safe to say the account will be suspended and the user will receive an email.

Once you get the virus it logs into your account then sends a message to your friends asking them to check out a Youtube video you posted. The message is usually about a current events or hot topic. One of the most notable promotes videos of Michael Jackson. Your friend clicks the link and lands on a fake Youtube page. Apparently the page is pretty convincing since it shows your picture on the fake Youtube page.

Instead of seeing the Youtube video, there is a message telling your friend to download the latest adobe FlashPlayer . Your friend downloads the fake upgrade and then BOOM! The’ve now got the Koobface virus too! Then the whole process starts again.

On Twitter Koopface may be a little harder to detect since it uses the tiny url converter to make links. Luckily Twitter has a tool called TweekDeck which will show the real link (the address where you will land) instead of the tiny url generated link.

Koobface is not a new type of virus. This is an old worm virus with a new (stronger) spin. The previous versions of Koobface only sent out 3-4 messages at a time. This time it’s a lot more. To make matters worse it seems the messages may be created remotely (from a computer somewhere else.) Koobface has been known to become problematic on the following web sites:

  • Facebook.com
  • Hi5.com
  • Friendster.com
  • Myyearbook.com
  • Myspace.com
  • Bebo.com
  • Tagged.com
  • Netlog.com
  • Fubar.com
  • livejournal.com
  • Twitter.com (recently added)
